Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) is now seeking a Fleet Maintenance Mechanic to work our 2nd Shift. Under general supervision, Fleet Maintenance Mechanics perform skilled preventive maintenance, repairs and adjustments on MPS vehicles and equipment. This job may require walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders, and the ability to lift and move items weighing up to 70 pounds. It also may require vision capacity to perform fine calibrations and differentiate between colored wires.

Primary responsibilities of Fleet Maintenance Mechanics include:
:Performing preventive maintenance on MPS fleet vehicles and equipment to maximize the effective life cycle of the vehicles and reduce downtime; reviewing status of vehicles and equipment, and recommending the most cost:effective replacement and repair options.
:Inspecting and diagnosing mechanical, electrical and hydraulic problems on vehicles and equipment; determining extent of necessary repairs, prioritizing work, and performing repairs; installing auxiliary and specialized equipment, including special radios.
:Performing arc and acetylene welding as required to repair, fabricate and modify metal components.
:Maintaining records and logs of services performed and general vehicle information; opening and closing work orders; and documenting work hours, parts used and repairs completed.
:Maintaining shop facility, cleaning work areas, and disposing of lubricants and chemicals in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
Preferred candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:
:Methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of vehicles, equipment and components.
:Methods used in a preventive maintenance program.
:Gasoline and diesel engines, power trains, hydraulics and pneumatics, and mechanical and electrical systems.
:Metal fabrication and welding methods and procedures.
:Federal and state safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards, safety precautions in a shop environment, and drug and alcohol testing guidelines for CDL.
:Inspecting, diagnosing and repairing mechanical, brake, fuel and electrical problems in a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
:Identifying maintenance needs and mechanical problems and taking corrective actions.
:Performing computerized diagnostic tests and fine calibrations on vehicle components and equipment.
:Welding, metal fabricating and adapting parts and tools to specific repairs.
:Safe use of power and hand tools, and chemicals, lubricants and cleaning compounds.
:Reading and interpreting technical manuals and specifications.
