The Dalai Lama said “Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. If you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them.”
I have sought out to write this piece and I don’t quite know where it will be sent as the words roll off my mind. I am a social worker, almost done with my master’s degree. I work every single day helping individuals find their path in life and help them through the challenges they face. I worked my butt off my whole life. I have raised two men on my own and they are both amazing young men, caring and compassionate.
For the past three weeks I have been searching tirelessly for a home to rent. I have been turned down EVERY SINGLE time. Most of the agencies turn me down before I can get past the description. Why, do you ask? Eligibility criteria! A long time ago people would meet with each other, they would talk about who they were, provide personal references and be honest with their strengths and their weaknesses. Now, in this day and time, this is no longer a reality. I am dating an amazing man who has a bad past. He made mistakes when he was younger and because of those mistakes, he has to live with the systemic consequences forever. He was just 17 years old and that event changed his life forever. He is now labeled by society and that label deters everyone from even finding out what an intelligent and compassionate man he is. I raised kids on my own, worked full time overnights and went to school during the day. I recently got into trouble with credit cards and have been trying to dig myself out of that hole for over a year now. We are not perfect people. We are human beings who made mistakes. Those mistakes don’t define our character. Those mistakes don’t dictate who we are as tenants and people. We simply want to live together and help each other save money.
In Galatians 6:2 it says “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” John 15:12 “Love each other as I have loved you.” There has to be someone out there who is willing to work with us and give us a chance to show the kind of people we really are. I am not my credit score and my partner is not his criminal background. We have dreams for our future. We have the desire to be with family and grow old. We just want to have a roof over our heads, together.
