Organization Description: Founded in 1951, the Mankato Symphony Orchestra serves the Greater Mankato
metropolitan area and surrounding communities in southern Minnesota. Kenneth Freed has served as Music Director
since 2006 and under his direction, the Orchestra has grown artistically and moved to the brand new Verizon Hall in
downtown Mankato starting with the 2016 season. The Orchestra performs 6 symphonic concerts, a Fourth of July
concert, children’s programming, and sponsors a chamber music concert series. Recently, the orchestra has
partnered with the City of Mankato to put on a rock show with the full orchestra. Mankato is a growing and vibrant
community with an active arts scene. It is home to the campus Minnesota State University and is the regional
center of south central Minnesota.

Primary Duties
Development / Fundraising:
· The Executive Director serves as the Orchestra’s Director of Development.
· Develop, implement and maintain effective donor/investor communication plans.
· Make frequent contact with donors and potential sponsors
· Cultivate potential donors and sponsors.
· Identify prospects for grants and donations, prepare applications, and manage any grants received in accordance with their provisions and requirements.
· Work with the Board to plan, develop, manage and implement an annual fundraising plan.
· Work with the Board, Orchestra, and volunteers to plan and carry out events intended to raise funds, and/or increase the visibility of the Symphony in the community.
· Solicit advertisements for the Orchestra’s program and other publications.

Administrative:
· Serve as primary contact with the City of Mankato and community partners.
· Develop and implement systems and procedures that ensure organized, efficient and effective operations with maximum utilization of available resources.
· Maintain records: financial, ticket sales, fundraising, grants, volunteers, schedules, and prospects.
· Maintain overall general office management to assure timely handling of correspondence, public inquiries, office coverage, and general office activities.
· Engage and employ necessary staff including administrative staff, music librarian, and personnel manager.
· Supervise, with the Music Director, an administrative assistant, the music librarian, the personnel manager, interns, and volunteers.
· Attend relevant non-profit and industry related workshops, seminars, and conferences to increase knowledge and insight as approved by the board.

Marketing and Sales:
· Actively promote Orchestra locally and regionally.
· Oversee ticket sales operations, development, and distribution.
· Develop and manage effective Symphony advertising and collateral materials.
· Research, develop and implement marketing plans for the organization overall branding, season ticket sales, single ticket sales, and special events.
· Ensure that all MSO documents, invitations and advertising reflect the organizations commitment to quality.
· Actively seek and secure multi-media marketing methods, using diverse, appropriate mediums
· Secure primary and secondary program sponsors for all performances
· Solicit advertisements for the Orchestra’s program and other publications

Public Relations:
· Represent organization and support the Music Director and Board of Directors in the community.
· Develop, establish, and maintain effective relationships with local and regional media contacts to maximize exposure opportunities.
· Develop, maintain manage positive, effective customer service.

Concert / Special Events:
· Support the Music Director, and Committees with the planning, production and logistics of concerts and special events.
· In collaboration with the Music Director ensure the contracts and agreements with guest artists are negotiated and approved in timely manner.
· Coordinate all arrangements necessary for the timely planning of the Orchestra’s performance schedule.
· Attend all concerts and special events.
· Serve as liaison to orchestra as needed regarding non-artistic matters.

Budget / Finance:
· With the Music Director prepare and submit proposed yearly operating budgets to the Executive Committee and Board.
· Maintain current and accurate financial records, monitor expenditures in accordance with budget, and submit monthly financial statements to the Executive Committee and Board.
· Ensure that grants are spent in accordance with guidelines and that reporting requirements are met.
· Develop and implement strategies to increase revenue through sales of individual tickets and season ticket packages.

Board of Directors:
· Attend all Board and Executive Committee meetings.
· Help identify and recruit qualified candidates for Board membership.
· Provide the information and tools needed by the board to perform their duties.
· Advise the Board through a report to the Board, participate at the Board meetings, and seek decisions from the board on major issues facing the Orchestra.
· With the board develop a support organization of volunteers to assist with various Orchestra activities.
· Assist and support the Board with strategic planning.

Education:
· The Executive Director serves as the Education Director.
· Plan and implement all aspects of MSO education and outreach programs, including youth concerts, family concerts, school concerts, adult education, and volunteer programs. Assess effectiveness of each activity.
· Cultivate and maintain professional relationships with the local school district, community colleges, and other education / civic institutions. Act as primary spokesperson for the MSO in education matter.

Experience

Qualifications
Required
Two years successful development experience
Proven fund development and donor development skills
Strong budgetary and fiscal management and reporting skills
Interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with community partners, employees, board members, and other stakeholders
Bachelor’s Degree

Preferred
Management experience with an orchestra.
Master’s or other graduate degree
Background in music performance, education, or management

Overview: For this position, the Orchestra is seeking a visionary steward who, under the direction of the board of directors, will collaborate with the Music Director to continue to grow the Orchestra artistically and financially. The Executive Director assumes responsibility for the management of all resources needed to achieve the orchestra’s mission. This position is responsible for overall day-to-day management of the Mankato Symphony’s administrative, marketing, public relations, fundraising, planning and development, financial operations, and other duties as assigned. The position reports to the Board of Directors through the board President.
