League of Women Voters Minnesota (LWV Minnesota), a nonpartisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation in government, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The organization, a member of the League of Women Voters of the United States, focuses its activities on voter education, advocacy and good government. LWV Minnesota has over 1,600 members across the state, most organized into local leagues, and is approaching its 100th year anniversary in 2019. The state office has a full and part-time staff of five (including this position) and an annual operating budget approaching $450k.


Hours: 20 hrs per week

Salary: $22-$25 hour DOQ

LWV Minnesota seeks a part-time professional to execute all of the organization’s bookkeeping and accounting functions. The position is targeted at 20 hours per week, with occasional opportunity for additional hours, and requires a regular and consistent work schedule.

Specific Responsibilities:

Manage all aspects of day to day bookkeeping and accounting processes including but not limited to: A/P, A/R, payroll, journal entries and bank reconciliation in accordance to GAAP.
Process and pay all invoices in a timely manner.
Receive and deposit all organizational revenue.
Prepare annual membership billing.
Execute semi-monthly payroll activities using a 3rd party payroll service.
Perform annual 1099 reporting for vendors.
Prepare monthly financial reports.
Allocate expenses and employee hours to the appropriate program and/or grant and provide reports as requested.
Coordinate with outside CPA firm to prepare year-end audit, IRS 990 and Minnesota filings. Gather necessary information from local leagues.
Support Executive Director and Finance Committee in development and analysis of annual organization budget.
Attend and support the Finance Committee.
Maintain accounting policies and systems of internal controls to ensure proper fiscal management.
Primary banking contact and responsible for cash management (e.g. anticipating cash needs and initiating transfers to ensure sufficient cash available at all times).
Primary contact for IRS, MN State Revenue and MN Unemployment.
Special projects as assigned. Recent examples include: assisting local chapters with their conversion from a 501c4 to 501c3 and preparing an RFP for financial firms.

Accounting degree or equivalent work experience.
3-5 years of work experience in bookkeeping/accounting, preferably with a nonprofit.
Strong Quickbooks skills, or equivalent, including all normal accounting transactions.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
Experience going through a financial audit.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Attention to detail, strong communication and problem solving are all critical skills for success in this role.
